Malavika Ranjan
AIR 21 [IIT HSEE 2018]

SLA:     You have achieved a top rank in IIT HSEE 2018.  How does it feel?
Malavika:        I feel ecstatic about my HSEE results. I had been preparing  for more than a year, and seeing my hardwork burgeon into fruitful results is  delightful. Studying in an institution as prestigious as IIT  had always been my dream. Now that I made it through, I really look forward having a great time learning and growing in IIT Madras.

SLA:     What / Who  inspired you to consider 'humanities" as a career option?
Malavika:        Social studies had always fascinated me as a child. As I grew up, I came across several other subjects under humanities such as- history, economics, civics and so on. With every passing class, the idea that Humanities is my calling grew stronger. Taking up humanities in plus two gave a direction and structure to my love for the stream and the subjects I took up kept me interested and always looking for more.

SLA:     Describe the role played by Sriram Academy in your success.
Malavika:        Sriram Academy has played a very significant role in my success in the HSEE. The material provided by the academy, the mock   tests, essay ideas and GK newsletters were indispensable in the process of preparation. I would also like to specifically appreciate the books provided by Sriram Academy for their wide coverage of diverse topics and an easy to understand format.

SLA:     Given that the syllabus is very vast, how did you go about tackling the various areas?
Malavika:        The foremost step of the preparation is to go through the syllabus thoroughly and understand what exactly it asks for. Once there is a general grasp over the topics, tackling the topics individually and in depth becomes easy. This process also makes the work systematic and helps keep a track of how far one has come. Apart from this, it is to be kept in mind that only bookish knowledge will not help. Reading the daily news and retaining the information to answer questions or make calculated guesses, is a must. When the syllabus is so vast, no knowledge is futile.

SLA:     Essay writing is the key to success in this exam.  How did you hone your essay writing skills?
Malavika:
Essay writing is all about having adequate knowledge about the topic and presenting the knowledge in an attractive manner. I made sure that before I started with any of my essays, I was well researched on the topic and I made pointers. Next came giving the essay a form. This was done  by deciding on the placement of the points to be included. If done in a systematic manner and regularly, essay writing can be tackled easily.

SLA:     Would you like to share some tips with our students who are gearing up for the 2019 examination?

Malavika:
The best tip would be to stay consistent and persistent. The preparation process will obviously be long and tough, but what decides our chances of getting through is how dedicated we are and how much we are ready to put in for the cause. Apart from that, devising a personalized technique of preparation and sticking to it always helps. All the best.
