Merly Maria Jomy
AIR 23 [IIT HSEE 2018]

SLA:     You have achieved a top rank in IIT HSEE 2018.  How does it feel?
Merly: It feels incredible to have achieved this rank and possibly be a part of one of India's most prestigious universities. I never expected to get in so it came as a wonderful surprise.

SLA : What / Who  inspired you to consider 'humanities" as a career option?
Merly: I had always known that I wanted to a career in the social sciences. From a young age, my interests were inclined towards it. My parents are also very supportive and encouraged me to take humanities for 11th and 12th and a humanities-based career path.

SLA : Describe the role played by Sriram Academy in your success.
Merly: I was a part of the distance learning program, so most of my experience with Sriram Academy was through their material and online tests. They played an immense role in my preparation. I found that the books were well written and covered vast topics without overwhelming me. The multiple mock tests were good practice for the HSEE and towards the end, I was quite familiar with the exam pattern.

SLA : Given that the syllabus is very vast, how did you go about tackling the various areas?
Merly : The first step I took was to assess my strengths and weaknesses by taking a mock test. I found that I was good at English and Math but I needed practice with the other subjects, especially G.K.. I started working on logical reasoning using Sriram's material and found a considerable improvement in my scores. Following that, I focused on history and regularly revised it. Despite having studied sociology and economics in school, I found that the HSEE had a strong focus on Indian economic history and other aspects of the subjects which aren't taught in schools. I relied on Sriram's material and especially the subject-wise mock tests for these topics.

SLA : Essay writing is the key to success in this exam.  How did you hone your essay writing skills?
Merly : I began to regularly read the newspaper and focus my attention on the editorial pages. I felt that the editorials provided good models on how to write essays. I also focused on building my vocabulary. it is important to practice writing essays with a time limit as well.

SLA : Would you like to share some tips with our students who are gearing up for the 2019 examination?
Merly : Practice regularly. Allotting a certain amount of time everyday can almost guarantee you a place at IIT. Refer to Sriram's material first before you move on to any other resources. Also, making my own notes from the material facilitated the speed at which I learned and revised. Try to do as many mocks as possible and note down the questions that you get wrong. All in all, stay calm and do your best.
